More than 500 people attended the two "Open House and Dairy Tours" hosted by the Center for Dairy Excellence in late June and early July. The two events were held at Windy Lane Jerseys in Tyrone, Blair County, and Brook-Corner Holsteins in Lebanon, Lebanon County. Thirty organizations offered their support as sponsors, helping to offset the cost of the open house events.
"Both Windy Lane and Brook-Corners served as excellent examples of dairy farm family businesses that are looking to thrive and grow in Pennsylvania's dairy industry," said John Frey, executive director of the Center for Dairy Excellence. "We were pleased with the positive message they portrayed about opportunities in dairy, and we were thrilled with the support they received from local and industry businesses."
Windy Lane Jerseys is a 160-cow dairy operation in Blair County, managed by Ryan and Jen Clark, who lease the facilities and focus on growing their dairy herd. Brook-Corner Holsteins is a 270-cow dairy in Lebanon County, owned by Reid and Diane Hoover, who recently expanded from 100 cows to provide opportunities for the next generation to become more involved with the dairy.
During the open houses, participants had the opportunity to tour the farm and visit with other dairy families attending the event. Both the Clarks and Hoovers shared their dairy stories with the group and highlighted key management areas on the farm. Frey shared information on programs and resources available from the Center for Dairy Excellence. Comments from the local Beef Checkoff and Dairy Checkoff programs were also part of the discussion.
Organizations that supported the center's "Open House and Dairy Tour" events included Fulton Bank, King Construction, Fisher & Thompson, Ag One Associates, Cedar Crest Equipment, Manada Construction, Team Ag, Agri-Applicators, Auto Vent LLC, Balsbaugh Insurance Agency, Cargill Animal Nutrition, C.M. High, Dairy One, Earl Z Musser Plumbing/Heating, Genex Cooperative Inc., Hoover Wood Shavings, LLC, Hostetter Sales & Service, Inc., Jim Charles, Keystone Concrete Products, K&K Feeds, Pennsylvania Holstein Association, Rigidply Rafters, J&J Silo Company, Sturdy Built Manufacturing, Select Sire Power, Smoker Door Sales, Swiss Premium and Umberger's of Fontana.
"Thanks to the generous support we received from these sponsors, the center was able to provide a picnic-style lunch to everyone who attended the open houses," Frey said. "Their contributions played a significant role in helping to make the events a success."
