History of the Vermont Farm Show
The Vermont Farm Show grew out of the Old Vermont Dairymen's Association and Maple Sugar Makers' Association meeting which has been held for numerous years. In 1930, these meetings were held at the Memorial Auditorium which was only a few years old at the time. In 1932, Orlando Martin asked the director of the Department of Agriculture if there was any possible way to put an educational exhibit and product competition in the basement of the Auditorium. The exhibit was a huge success and so began the Vermont Farm Show.
These Product Competitions and the Union Agriculture Meetings continued to grow and prosper in Burlington through 1946. The only two years meetings and competitions did not take place were in 1943 and 1944, during the war.
In 1947 the Union Agriculture Meetings and Farm Products Contests were moved to the Barre Municipal Auditorium were they have been held ever since. The change from Burlington to Barre was necessitated by the leasing of the Memorial Auditorium in Burlington to the Veteran's Administration.
In November 1957, the Vermont Farm Show, Inc. was officially organized and incorporated. The official by laws of the organization were revised and adopted at a meeting held May 15, 1979.
During its 78 years, the Show has undergone many changes. The addition of exhibitors in the outdoor ice rink in 1984 and significant changes in 1999. The most significant change will be this coming year 2012 when we change locations from Barre to Essex Jct. to the Champlain Valley Exposition.
